Composite Fillings

Composite fillings, also referred to as natural or tooth-colored fillings, have evolved into the preferred way to repair decayed and broken teeth, when the situation permits, by many Dentists and patients. With a greater shift in aesthetics and how patients want their teeth and mouth to look, options that weren't available in years past now make clean natural looking restorations possible. Most patients are now choosing composite resin or “white” fillings over amalgam or “silver” fillings.

Composite filling material is made of a tooth-colored resin and used to repair chipped, decayed and damaged teeth. This natural looking material allows for more realistic beauty and image lending to a healthy vibrant smile. Naturally rebuilding and supporting remaining tooth structure, as well as insulating the nerve, composite fillings allow for more conservative preparations because of the inherent bonding and strength-increasing component of the material. While earlier composites had a history of leaking and high likelihood of recurrent decay, techniques and materials have improved so much that there is now very little concern with the integrity of the material. As a result, composite resin is predictably being used to restore anterior and posterior teeth. Composite fillings can become discolored or stained, but their durability and lifespan have greatly improved compared to earlier material characteristics. Proper oral home care must be practiced after composite fillings are placed to ensure that the filling lasts a long time.

You will receive care instructions at the conclusion of your treatment. Good oral hygiene practices, a proper diet and regular dental visits will aid in the life of your new Composite Fillings.
